The Maryland intrastate rule
Federal USDOT registration depends on the vehicle and operation. The rows below show what Maryland requires for carriers operating inside the state. Our state DOT number requirements table holds the same answer for every state. A field reading "Not confirmed" means this guide has no verified figure for that field.

- The SHA Maryland DOT Numbers page cites only the federal marking rule and names no Maryland statute, and the Maryland General Assembly StatuteText pages print no section catchlines, so no verified-heading provenance can be recorded for a Maryland section citation here. The identification-number regime is published through the SHA pages and the Motor Carrier Handbook, which are the documents pinned below.
The Motor Carrier Handbook states a USDOT number is required for a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more, whichever is greater, in intrastate or interstate commerce. The SHA Maryland DOT Numbers page frames the display duty as applying to every registered truck over 10,000 pounds, truck tractor and bus operated on public roads.
Maryland requires the number even for carriers that never leave the state: a carrier whose vehicles never leave Maryland and never touch interstate cargo obtains a Maryland USDOT Number, the state's intrastate motor carrier identification number. Vehicles exempt when operated only intrastate include vehicles already displaying a USDOT Number, farm trucks and farm truck tractors, farm area vehicles, emergency vehicles, vehicles used primarily to transport money or commercial paper, government-owned vehicles and vehicles within 15 days of purchase.
The Maryland USDOT Number (MD DOT Number)
The federal number is not the whole story in Maryland: the state issues its own carrier credential, and the two are tied together during the state application covered on the Maryland intrastate authority page.

- Display rule
- Every truck, truck tractor and bus operated on Maryland highways in either intrastate or interstate commerce shall be identified on both sides of the vehicle with the name or trade name of its owner, operator or lessee and the identification number issued by FMCSA, preceded by the letters USDOT. Carriers not in compliance are subject to fines.
Maryland layers no second branded carrier number on top of the federal one, the way California issues a CA# or Texas a TxDMV Number. The state intrastate credential IS a USDOT number with Maryland intrastate designation, issued through FMCSA and enforced by the SHA Motor Carrier Division, so the federal registration step is the program itself rather than a prerequisite.

- USDOT application fee
- No state fee for the intrastate identification number is published on the SHA Maryland DOT Numbers page or in the Motor Carrier Handbook, so none is recorded. The Handbook separately notes FMCSA charges a fee for the interstate MC Number (operating authority), which is a different credential from the USDOT Number.
Carriers often hunt for a Maryland paper application; none exists for the intrastate number on the agency pages we checked. The SHA page and Handbook are explicit that all DOT numbers, interstate and intrastate, are issued online at FMCSA's website, and Maryland's role is the display requirement and enforcement.
