Who licenses in Nevada
Nevada is your base jurisdiction when you are a Nevada-based interstate motor carrier operating IFTA qualified motor vehicles, with operational control and records kept in Nevada or made available there. The manual points non-Nevada companies running trucks solely inside the state to Nevada Only plates instead, with none of that mileage on an IFTA return.
Applying and renewing
Apply when you register your IRP vehicles: form MC 090 lists the required documents, the Motor Carrier branch offices in Reno, Elko and the Las Vegas area take applications in person, and the division runs a mailbox for submissions. Licenses renew annually with the renewal window opening each October, the license runs to the end of the calendar year, and decals for each fleet vehicle ship with it at no charge.
Quarterly filing and penalties
Returns are quarterly, due the last day of the month after each quarter closes, with the manual's own table listing the four dates. A late or unfiled return can draw a Notice of Assessment for the estimated tax plus a penalty set as the greater of a flat amount or a percentage of the delinquent taxes, with interest on top. The due-dates block on this page renders the four dates and the penalty terms as the manual states them.
The tax rates live in the quarterly matrix
IFTA rates change every quarter, so we keep them in one refreshed store instead of copying them onto every state page. The current quarter is 3Q 2026, effective Jul 1, 2026 through Sep 30, 2026. Use the IFTA rates by state table for the full matrix, or the IFTA calculator to run your miles and gallons against the current rates.
For the registration-to-return process in order, follow the Nevada IFTA filing walkthrough.
What pairs with IFTA
IFTA and IRP travel together: the same interstate operation that needs a fuel tax license usually needs apportioned plates through Nevada IRP. If you are still setting up, the full order of operations is in start a trucking company in Nevada.
