Nevada sells temporary trip permits to local carriers at Motor Carrier branch offices and contracts with about 20 authorized third-party vendors to issue trip and fuel permits. All carriers must obtain their permits before entering the state or before traveling in Nevada: there are no ports of entry, so nobody will check them at a border. Nevada does not participate in the federal Unified Carrier Registration; interstate carriers register through plan.ucr.gov.
The trip permit (registration side)
This credential answers for registration. Without it, a vehicle whose cab card does not list Nevada has no legal registration standing in the state.
- Stands in for
- Nevada registration for intrastate carriers and carriers entering Nevada without Nevada credentials
- Fee
- $5 ($5.00 for the 24-hour temporary permit (120-hour for buses) plus the flat per-mile charge in the rate table below, per the DMV Motor Carrier Permits page. Vendors may charge additional service fees.)
- Who needs it
- Nevada-based local carriers and entering carriers that need temporary registration credentials. Out-of-state carriers are tiered instead: vehicles 10,000 lbs or less doing business in Nevada need a Non-Resident Business Permit within 10 days of starting work; vehicles 10,001 to 26,000 lbs need a Registration Permit before entering the state; vehicles 26,001 lbs or more, or 3 or more axles, need both a Registration Permit and a Fuel Tax Permit before entering.
The fuel permit (tax side)
This credential answers for the state's highway or fuel tax when there is no IFTA license (or, in the weight-distance states, no tax account) behind the truck.
- Fee
- $30 ($30.00 flat fee per the DMV Motor Carrier Permits page. Vendors may charge additional service fees.)
- Valid for
- Per-entry temporary fuel tax authorization; carriers making regular Nevada trips should license under IFTA through the Motor Carrier Division instead
- Who needs it
- Carriers entering Nevada with qualified motor vehicles that hold no IFTA license and no Nevada fuel tax credentials. Vehicles 26,001 lbs or more, or 3 or more axles, must have both a Registration Permit and a Fuel Tax Permit before entering the state.
- Where to buy
- Motor Carrier branch offices; Authorized third-party permit vendors under state contract
Worth knowing
Do not call NDOT for trip or fuel permits: NDOT handles only oversize/overweight. DMV over-length permits (reducible loads exceeding 70 feet, up to 129,000 lbs) go through the DMV Motor Carrier Division at (775) 684-4711 option 1.
Where these fit in the Nevada permit stack
Temporary permits are the exception path. The standing credentials they replace are IRP apportioned registration and the Nevada IFTA license. Oversize loads use a different permit family entirely, covered in Nevada oversize and overweight permits, and the full picture of every state permit lives in Nevada trucking permits.
